Win10 not playing nicely with iPhone?

I’m relatively new to Windows 10, but I’ve never seen this problem in almost 10 years of iPhone usage:

I plug in the phone (iPhone 6, skipping itunes) and open a folder to view my photos. Even though there are over 1,000 photos on the phone, I can only see 20-30 of them in Windows Explorer.

This never, ever happened in Win XP or Win 7. And apparently it’s not uncommon, but neither MS nor Apple wants to admit any flaws in their software.

Any ideas? I love to learn a lot about PCs, but this is not one of those times — this is like your car failing to start when you have to get to work.

Difficulty: if anyone says “just use iCloud” I will kick them in the nards. I wants mah pics right nao and I want them to flow thru the magical cable!

Seriously, iPhones have pissed me off so much in the past 6 months, I’m about to go Android...

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart/nards.

I have both an iPhone 8 and a laptop running Windows 10 in front of me. Only problem is I lack an iPhone cable, so I’m of no use.

I have an iphone SE running ios 11.3.1, and I have a Dell laptop for work running Win10 - it’s a recent, fresh install of Win10, too. I have never used itunes, nor do I use icloud for photos.

So unlocked my phone, plugged it in to the laptop via USB, and was prompted on the phone to allow the detected device to access photos, which of course I said “Allow.”

I opened the phone under windows explorer and I could see several folders with photos in them - I’m guessing there is a max. folder size, hence the breakup? Anyway, it looks like I can see all my photos and videos between all those folders, e.g. 100APPLE, 101APPLE, 102APPLE, etc.

I figured I could at least try that since I have similar hardware...

Thanks...that’s exactly how it USED to work for me, as well. The multiple folders are normal. In my case, though, it’s just one folder with the past two days of pics in it.

I have a backup laptop (Win 7) that still works, but all the multiple PC file tranfering gets tedious/dangerous. I really need a home cloud drive (NAS).

(iPhone 6, skipping itunes )

I think this is your problem right there. From my limited experience with iPhones despite my entire family minus 2 other people uses it, Apple makes it as difficult as possible for you to use without it.

I do understand why you don’t want to use it... iTunes is a terrible POS. Who hardcodes storage to C:\Users?

Never had such issues, since Android just uses MTP for transfers which is an industry standard.

Did you try restarting your iPhone and the computer?

Well of course it isn’t because you’re trying to break out of the walled garden.

I will say for sure it’s hit or miss with connecting my phone to various laptops, and some of it depends on the ios version I swear. Because it will work one time, then months later it won’t despite nothing on the computer changing.

On the NAS, yeah, I have one of those but haven’t been good about using it regularly. I have a regular external HD at work that I keep my pics backed up on, so if my house literally burns down, at least there’s a secondary storage location.

I should be more sophisticated about this, really. But I do keep a spreadsheet of what photos are backed up where, at least.

I’ve just been reading that in some cases, you just need itunes ON THE PC for file transfers to work (WITHOUT USING ITUNES).

Sure, there might be some drivers that get installed along the way, but on the surface that is ridiculous.

“Download our software that you’ll never use just so you can do a USB transfer of files from our device that you paid $700 for. No, you still don’t have to use our software. You just have to HAVE our software.”
